I've been working on a new project that requires me to work with at least five other people who are scattered all over the US and I'm learning it's a very difficult process. Usually when I work with people it's one, two or three at the most and even that I usually only talk with one of the them after they've discuss everything with the other members. It's difficult because of the different communication styles and methods people use. For example, some prefer the phone, others email(my favorite) and some instant messenger programs(my least favorite). Then you mix in everyones unique ideas and thoughts, speed of development and organization skills and it's a very hairy process. I believe this is one of the areas where a project manager would be very helpful but in cases where you're working with other freelancers chances are there will not be one available. I'm learning and so far I've managed to not yell at anyone but there are some times I just have to get up and leave the computer before I got loco.
